Frequently asked questions
Where is my journal stored?
On your iPhone, and in your private iCloud if iCloud is turned on for Arpente. Arpente works without an account or server: we can’t access your routes.
Why does Arpente need my location?
To draw your route while you record. Arpente uses your location only during a recording, and never sends it to us. If you turned location access off, turn it back on in Settings › Arpente › Location.
My route looks jagged or cuts corners
GPS is less precise under thick trees, in deep valleys and between tall buildings. For the best route, start recording outside once the map shows your position, and keep your iPhone in a pocket or bag rather than deep in a backpack.
Does recording drain my battery?
GPS uses some battery, like any map app. For a long hike, start with a full charge, and lock your iPhone between looks at the map: Arpente keeps recording with the screen off.
How do I move my journal to a new iPhone?
With iCloud turned on for Arpente, your journal comes back on its own on your new iPhone, with every route, note and photo.
How do I export a route as GPX?
Open the exploration, tap Share, then Export as GPX. Save the file to Files or send it to another app.
How do I delete my data?
Delete an exploration from its page, or delete the app to erase its data from your iPhone. To erase the iCloud copy too, go to Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Manage Storage. Export the routes you want to keep first.
Is Arpente free?
Yes, with no ads, no subscription and no account.
